Can I really make a difference ? Yes you can, and guess what — you’ll feel great as well.

We are just beginning to understand that how we live, what we do and what we buy has a ripple effect on the world around us.

No matter who you are, what you buy can stop factories from belching out toxic fumes. Don’t buy what they manufacture — demand a safer alternative to what they make. The less of what you buy is less $$$$$ for the offenders, and that’s all they care about! Demand certified organic, re-use, re-purpose.

Some ideas:

I covered some antique chairs in my Mothers old mink coat because I wanted to keep it for sentimental reasons, but didn’t want it hanging in the closet!

Saturdays in Oz used to be recycling day, now we can put it out like trash.

Reuse your bags from the shops if you don’t want to buy any. I have some from Whole Foods that are nearly 2 years old, and when there done I’ll put them in a garden bed to stop weeds!

Go buy a few compact fluorescent light bulbs. I know they cost more but guess what ? 1 bulb lasts 10,000 hrs compared to 750 hrs for a conventional one. WOW — that saves you approx $41.00 and that’s just 1 bulb. You feel good AND you have done a bit to help out energy conservancy.

Did you know by buying a local pound of Asparagus, instead of Asparagus flown from Chile, you have saved 73 LBS of fuel energy?

There are lots of little things that you can do all day long to have an effect. It is kind of like a Fung Shui game of concious delight.

I am a stickler for suncreen. Having lived in Asia & Australia, I was always in the sun. As a kid my Mum used to hassle me all the time to get slathered in suncreen — I had milky white skin & freckles. I always had to wear a hat & a shirt, and that is still a must.

20 mins of sun a day is actually good for most of us — it produces vitamin D. I always feel great after a bit of sun on myself. The D is said to protect us from some cancers. The only trouble with conventional sunscreens is they contain a cocktail of toxins like Methyl Benzyliden, camphor, parabens, oxybenzone etc etc.

These are just a few of the chemicals that in tests on animals shows accumulation in breast milk & to have an effect on the hormonal system. Remember — our skin is so permiable so please be careful what you put on it. It is our largest organ so what goes on it lands up in our internal system very quickly.

Petroleum products are regulated in the food industry, but not in cosmetics, so always check the ingredients list. Also when you are out in the sun be careful about wearing perfumes & lotions with scent — it can lead to blotchy, itchy skin.

If you are trying to help previous sun damage, anti oxidant supplements like green tea and vitamins E & C are proven to inhibit sun damage, reduce inflammation, and help to make sunscreens more effective.
